tech balloons hovering twice as high as commercial airline routes, where they broadcast a 3G or LTE network, like that which most smartphones use for their internet connection, back down to earth.
"Sri Lanka is on its way to becoming the very first country in the world to have network connectivity cover the entire country," Sri Lanka Telecom Minister Mangala Samaraweera said.
"Allow me to conclude by saying that I am proud to declare that we are at the cusp of reclaiming our heritage of being connected to each other and connected to the world. In a few months we will truly be able to say: Sri Lanka. Covered."
Once the balloons is in the stratosphere, it will be twice as high as commercial airliners and barely visible to the naked eye, Google has said.
Sri Lanka became the first country in South Asia to introduce mobile phones in 1989 and the first to roll out a 3G network in 2004. It was also the first in the region to unveil a 4G network two years ago.
