If you're wondering why your iPhone battery life is draining away so fast since you upgraded to iOS 9, then you might want to look at your Facebook app. The social media giant has held up its hands to admit that its iOS app is causing battery issues.

Reports of the battery drain began earlier this week, with one user, entrepreneur Matt Gilligan, explaining in a blog post that Facebook's iOS app was causing up to 15% of battery drain over a 7 day period.

Interestingly, in Gilligan's situation, he had the background app refresh option switched off for Facebook, yet it was still running for 3.4 hours in the background over those 7 days.

Thankfully, though, Facebook says it's looking into the issue.

"We have heard reports of some people experiencing battery issues with our iOS app," the social media giant said in a statement to TechCrunch.

"We're looking into this and hope to have a fix in place soon."

"We found a few key issues and have identified additional improvements, some of which are in the version of the app that was released today," Facebook's Ari Grant wrote today.

The first issue we found was a "CPU spin" in our network code. A CPU spin is like a child in a car asking, "Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?"with the question not resulting in any progress to reaching the destination. This repeated processing causes our app to use more battery than intended. The version released today has some improvements that should start making this better.

A second issue for battery drain is the way Facebook handles audio playback. "If you leave the Facebook app after watching a video, the audio session sometimes stays open as if the app was playing audio silently," Grant said.

If you're using the Facebook app, then the best way for now would be to delete the app and login via your mobile browser such as Safari or Chrome. Facebook has said it is working on a fix for the issue so you could reinstall it then.
